The Driskill, in The Unbound Collection by Hyatt
We chose this address because Austin's political and social history quite literally happened inside it:...
Austin Proper Hotel opens with an interior that refuses to whisper. Kelly Wearstler dressed 238 rooms and suites in Arts & Crafts-inspired wall coverings, distressed hardwoods, and barefoot-friendly area rugs, a palette that reads as maximalist without tipping into clutter. Handel Architects gave the building the scale to carry it, and the result sits confidently inside downtown's Second Street District as one of the more design-forward large-format hotels the city has produced, closer in spirit to a design gallery than to a conventional big-box hotel lobby.
We chose Austin Proper for the sheer density of ideas per square foot. Five distinct dining and drinking venues share one address, Forbes has awarded it Four Stars, and a Michelin Key adds an outside voice to the design conviction already on display. It's a hotel built to be photographed, but the craft holds up past the first impression, from the tasting menu at Kappo Kappo to the cold plunge at Verbena Spa, and from the rooftop pool scene down to the smallest textile choice in the guest rooms.
The Second Street District puts Lady Bird Lake, ACL Live, and downtown's best shopping within walking distance, a rare combination of waterfront calm and urban density. Guests can trade a rooftop pool session for a trail ride along the lake without leaving the neighborhood, and the district's boutiques and restaurants mean evenings don't require a rideshare. It's a location built for travelers who want downtown's energy without downtown's sprawl, and close enough to Austin's live-music core to make a late night easy.

Wearstler's design language carries through every room: distressed hardwood floors, Arts & Crafts-patterned textiles, and rugs meant to be walked on barefoot rather than admired from the doorway. Across 238 rooms and suites the effect stays consistent without feeling mass-produced, a difficult balance at this scale that the property manages by leaning into craft details, local artisan touches, and a materials palette that rewards a second look. Suites add sitting areas and, in select categories, skyline views over the Second Street District.
Few hotels in Austin pack this much dining variety under a single roof. The Peacock handles Mediterranean-inspired plates, La Piscina turns wood-grilled Tex-Mex into a rooftop pool-party staple, and Kappo Kappo offers a French-Japanese tasting counter for a more formal evening. The Quill Room and Goldie's Sunken Bar split cocktail duty between craft precision and moody, sunken-lounge atmosphere. Menus lean on local farms and nutrient-rich ingredients, a wellness thread that runs quietly under the maximalist design, and the range means a week of dinners without repeating a venue.
At 238 rooms, Austin Proper trades intimacy for range: this is the choice for travelers who want options, five venues, a spa, a rooftop pool, rather than a small property's singular focus. Its downtown Second Street address suits anyone building a trip around restaurants, live music, and walkable evenings, less so travelers seeking a quiet retreat. Forbes Four-Star service standards and Michelin Key recognition make it a safe choice for guests who want scale without sacrificing design rigor, and trail access along Lady Bird Lake gives early risers a reason to get up before the pool opens.
