From Tuscan Postcard to Italian Reverie

Hotel Viata did not simply open in West Lake Hills, it was unmade and remade there. The property spent its first seven years as Hotel Granduca Austin, a Tuscan-style villa hotel that, by the early 2020s, read more like a theme than a genuine point of view. In 2022, new operator Pacific Hospitality Group closed the doors for a top-to-bottom renovation, enlisted the Austin branding studio Tenderling to rename and reposition the whole property, and reopened it that November as Hotel Viata, a name drawn from the Italian words for life and love. The villa facade stayed. Almost everything behind it changed.

Why It Works

We chose Hotel Viata because a rebrand this complete is rare, and this one delivers on its premise. General manager David Putnicki has described the concept as inspired by Italy but steeped in Austin's culture, and that balance shows up in the details rather than the marketing copy: a lobby built like a living room, a boutique market stocked with goods from small Austin businesses, and a restaurant that treats Hill Country produce as seriously as its Italian technique. Independent, recently reinvented, and unmistakably itself, it earns a place on a list that skips the city's interchangeable business hotels.

Why This Location

West Lake Hills sits just across the Colorado River from downtown Austin, close enough for a quick ride in but removed enough to feel like Hill Country rather than city center. It is a quiet, leafy, affluent pocket of the metro, better known locally for golf courses and hiking trails than hotel density, which makes Hotel Viata something of an anomaly: a full-service resort in a neighborhood built for residents, not visitors. Guests get the calm of the hills with downtown Austin a short drive away.

The Rooms and Suites

The 194-room count held steady through the renovation, but the room mix leans toward flexibility: 38 of those are suites with small kitchenettes and separate living areas, built for longer stays and for families who want a door between the kids and the rest of the room. The redesign favors a pared-back, textural palette over the former villa's heavier Tuscan styling, with the Italian references now reading as a mood rather than a costume.

Laurel and the New Austin Italian

Laurel, the hotel's restaurant, opened alongside the rebrand under executive chef Tommy Suddeth Jr., and it is doing some of the most interesting work on the property. The kitchen pairs Texas Hill Country ingredients with Italian coastal technique, serves all three meals, and keeps a cocktail list and a kids' menu running at the same table, which is harder to pull off well than it sounds. It is a restaurant built for hotel guests who would rather not leave for dinner, and for Austin locals who treat it as a destination in its own right.

Spa Viata and the Pool Deck

Spa Viata opened on the hotel's second floor in October 2022, with eight treatment rooms that include a couples' suite and a private suite with its own hydrotherapy tub and rain shower, alongside steam rooms, a sauna, and a relaxation lounge drawing on Italian spa traditions. Downstairs, the renovated pool deck adds reservable cabanas, an outdoor fireplace, and a poolside cafe pouring specialty cocktails, the kind of detail that turns an afternoon by the water into the main event rather than a pause between meetings.
