The Stephen F Austin Royal Sonesta Hotel ★★★★

A Century on Congress Avenue, Still in Business

Congress Avenue runs from Lady Bird Lake to the Texas State Capitol, and the Stephen F Austin has watched almost the whole of it from number 701 for close to a century. It has been part of the city political furniture for that long: legislators, lobbyists and reporters have used the lobby as an annex of the Capitol through more sessions than anyone counts, and the old Hippopotamus Lounge and Piano Bar belongs to Austin folklore. The hotel now runs under Royal Sonesta, which has kept the bones and the address rather than inventing a new personality for it.

Why It Works

Two things settled it for us. The first is the terrace, the only outdoor terrace on Congress Avenue, looking straight up the street at the Capitol dome. There are taller bars in Austin and none with that view at that angle. The second is what the building carries: a heritage hotel in the middle of the political district, with named suites, a proper steak restaurant and an indoor pool, none of which the newer towers offer. It is also the most generous hotel downtown about dogs, with no breed or weight limit at all.

Why This Location

Seventh and Congress is the working heart of downtown. The Paramount Theatre is a few doors up the same block, the Capitol grounds are a walk north, and the Governor's Mansion sits behind them. Turn south and Congress carries you past Second Street toward Lady Bird Lake and the hike-and-bike trail, then over the bridge into South Congress. Sixth Street begins one block north for live music, and Rainey Street is east. Almost everything visitors come for is inside twenty minutes on foot, which is the point of paying for Congress Avenue rather than a quieter corner.

The Terrace, and the Bar Behind It

Stephen F's Bar and Terrace is the reason to walk in even without a room upstairs. Inside it is a historic bar doing hand-crafted cocktails, zero-proof drinks, local beer and a considered wine list; outside it is a raised terrace over the sidewalk with the Capitol filling the end of the street. Come at the end of the day, when the dome takes the light and the avenue empties of state workers. It is one of the few places in Austin where the city looks the way it does on a postcard and is not trying to.

Rooms, Suites and the Names on the Doors

The 200 rooms are what a hotel of this vintage does well: solid, generously proportioned, and quieter than the street below suggests. The suites are the draw, and they are named rather than numbered. The Governor's Suite and the Yellow Rose Suite are the ones to ask about, with the Bridal Suite and a one-bedroom king behind them, and each carries more character than a standard tower suite of the same size. Rooms facing Congress get the avenue and the noise that comes with it; the inner side is the choice for sleeping.

Old West Cooking, and the Practical Half

Roaring Fork handles dinner, Old West cooking given a modern turn and built on premium steak, and it draws people who are not staying. Cafe Fuller does breakfast, hot and cold, quickly. The pool is indoors with a hot tub beside it, open through the day, and the fitness room never closes and keeps Peloton bikes. Event space runs past 6,000 square feet across six rooms, the largest taking close to 380 for a reception. Two pets per suite, no breed or weight limit.
